Gas Saving Tips to Avoid Gas Delivery
Annually, we receive approximately 20 calls for people that have run out of gas and need a towing service to deliver gasoline to their location. Often times, the reason for running out of gas was due to the driver not knowing how much gas they were burning before their tank went dry. There are multiple ways to help your vehicle burn fuel more efficiently.
- Keep Tires Optimally Inflated- Fuel efficiency is drastically affected by the surface area of the tire that contacts the road. When seasons change and temperatures fluctuate, it may be necessary to inflate or deflate tires according to their manufacturers specifications. For example, warm air expands tires in summer months which means it could be necessary to let air out if air was added in the colder seasons.
- Tweak Driving Habits- It could surprise some people to know that acceleration and deceleration can affect MPG. Aggressive acceleration and braking will cause more fuel to be burned. To combat this, softer acceleration and deceleration will allow the engine to use fuel more efficiently. Cruise control should be utilized to decrease the fluctuation of RPM and ultimately gas consumption.
- Reduce Drag and Mass- The heavier a vehicle is, the more energy is required to move it. For example, strapping a couch to the top of a van and moving down the highway will cause the vehicle to burn more gas because the vessel is less aerodynamic. The couch increases the weight of the van and creates drag; causing more fuel to be burned. Try to find items in your vehicle that can be removed like heavy bags or unneeded items.
